The cool stone of the hall outside of Jadeâs prison cell grounded Morgan as she sat on the ground. Normally when she visited Jade, she stood near the bars of her cell so Morgan could see her while they spoke to each other, but today she didnât even bother trying to appear dignified. She didnât care enough to put the effort into some kind of facade today. Jade was close enough that Morgan could see the fresh bruises Vester had left on her face and neck from their most recent âinterrogationâ.
âWhereâs Cassian?â Jade asked, sitting in front of the bars, âHe usually walks you here, but youâre alone today.â
âIâm alone most of the time,â Morgan whispered, not really intending for Jade to hear her.
Jade huffed, and Morgan wasnât sure if it was a laugh or if she was annoyed. Morgan tucked her knees up against her chest and wrapped her arms around them. From the corner of her eye, Morgan saw Jade tilt her head as she watched her movements. She was assessing her like she always did. Morgan used to find it unsettling, but now it just reminded her of the way animals watch humans as they walk by, trying to figure out if theyâre going to get any closer.
âWhat happened?â Jade asked.
Morgan was surprised that there was genuine curiosity in her words, instead of the kind of mocking sarcasm that usually decorated their conversations.
âCassian is being sent out on assignment with Tailon and Vester.â
After considering Morganâs answer for a few silent minutes, Jade said, âHe seems like someone who can be trusted to handle himself.â
âItâs not him that I donât trust.â
âThatâs the smartest thing youâve said to me since I was thrown in this damn cell,â Jade said, her usually sarcasm leaking back into her words.
Morgan rolled her eyes and nearly jumped out of her skin when Jade laughed. It was a real laugh too, not one of the cruel laughs she liked to throw at people she was trying to hurt. That one laugh made her seem more like the woman that Morgan had known in Orzen than anything else she had said or done. That was Minnaâs laugh and the same small smile that always followed was fixed firmly on Jade's lips too.
Sometimes Morgan wondered how much of Minna had been a lie, and how much had been Jade. Ever since Morgan had started visiting her more, she had seen more and more of the woman she had known poking through the icy scales that Jade liked to show the world.
âDo you have more questions for me? Or have you just come to bask in my presence?â Jade asked, coking an eyebrow at Morgan.
âHow much of it is a lie?â
Morgan didnât really know what she meant. She could have been asking about their relationship in Orzen, or the Red Spades, or just about anything else. Morgan was just so tired of everyone lying to her. Cassian seemed to believe Jade was right about a lot, so maybe asking her was worth something.
